How to add a video to your website

When you add images and text to your page, there’s usually no hassle to upload and host it there. So why isn’t there an “upload video” button?

Its no secret that a picture says more than a thousand words, and 40 seconds of video (at 25 frames per second) is a thousand pictures. That means 1 million words and 40 seconds of video can cover the same amount of information.

Joking aside, no video can cover all the information you would like to display on your website – but a video will enrich your content, and engage your visitors. So back to the title of this blog post…

How do I put a video on my website?

When you add images and text to your page, there’s usually no hassle to upload and host it there. So why isn’t there an “upload video” button?

Without going too deep into the technical challenges of putting a video on your website, the problem is as follows:

A video requires more data delivered to the end user (compared to images and text). Websites run on servers, which can only handle so much traffic being served to the site visitors. Also, storing video takes up a lot of space. Your webserver might have a certain storage capacity that will run out quite fast if you start uploading videos to it.

The simplest way to have a video on your website is to host it somewhere else.

This is where Embed Codes come in handy.


An embed code is a HTML tag that can contain content loaded from other places than your server.

It usually looks like this:

There are a large array of things you can do with embed codes; and loading a video on your website is one of them.

So where do I put my video, and how do I get my embed codes?

Enter YouTube.

Video hosting sites

You can easily use YouTube to host your videos. When you have a video on Youtube, you can retrieve an embed code. Put that embed code on your page where you want the video to be displayed.

That’s all great, but there is a catch.

When you are using Youtube you should be aware that your video takes on a life of its own. On YouTube, your video can get recommended to others and people can comment and leave likes (or dislikes). When managing your brand, you need to be aware of these things. What kind of engagement are you looking for?

Also, using Youtube can lead users away from your site, as they are distracted by other content recommended in the video player.

And if that wasn’t enough to give you pause, know that Youtube takes a strict role in moderating your content and will remove anything that either goes against their guidelines, or content that is copyright protected. If you use 7 seconds of a popular song in a video, or a picture that you don’t own the rights to, YouTube may remove it. They don’t do this right away, and you must keep an eye on your account to make sure your videos are still available.
